AHNENTAFEL NUMBERS
Ahnentafel (from the German "Ancestor Table") numbers are a simple way of numbering the generations. Taking yourself as 1, your father will be 2 and your mother 3, your paternal grandfather will be 4 and your paternal grandmother 5, your maternal grandfather 6 and maternal grandmother 7. Therefore, a person's father is always twice his own number, and his/her mother is twice his own number +1.
