FILTER CAPACITORS

Model 400

The Series 1 and Series 2 model 400 used 5900 uF/85 volt filter capacitors. Most measured 4 1/4" long x 1 3/4" diameter. Some early amps had 5900 or 7300 uF/75 volt caps. Typical supply voltages are approximately +/- 80 VDC. All variations worked fine, even in cases where the supply voltages exceeded the rating. Unfortunately, the original caps are no longer available. Ed has obtained a supply of new Cornell Dubilier 10,000 uF/100 volt caps which are 4 1/4" long x 2" diameter for $20 each plus shipping.

IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. Because of the different value, the caps must be replaced as a pair. Ed will refund $5 upon return of the remaining good 5900 uF cap.
2. On Series 1 400's with VU meters there may not be enough clearance behind the left meter for the larger caps. Check closely before ordering.
3. There are several mounting methods for the 400 filter caps.

  • Early 400's with 1 3/4" mounting clamps on the side of the chassis: These will NOT fit the larger 2" diameter caps. The clamps must be replaced and new holes drilled in the chassis. Ed has the larger clamps for $5/pair if you wish to order them at the same time. See NOTE 2 above.
  • With a standoff and a flat strap holding the caps: This method will fit the larger caps but you may have to fit a longer screw.
  • With caps mounted to the transfomer end bell with double stick foam tape: Remove the old tape and use fresh double stick tape. You may also glue the caps with contact cement or silicone seal.
  • Later 400's and Series 2 models with a "two humped" bracket: This bracket will fit the larger caps with no modifications. Do not overtighten the bracket screw or it will strip.

Model 700

All versions of the 700 used 9800 uF/100 volt filter capacitors. All brands were the same size. Ed has a supply of good used caps available for $10 plus shipping.
