Our grand opening took place on Saturday, May 24. The Sprayground and pools were in full swing with lots of swimming and (yes!) splashing. Suzy Q the clown created her magical balloon sculptures and everyone feasted on hotdogs, popcorn and other goodies. Sponsors for the Grand Opening were: East Bay Community Foundation, Diablo Valley Federal Credit Union, Pleasant Hill Lions Club and the Law Offices of Michael Sterrett.
Pictures below from the Grand Opening include: Christine Sampson, Pleasant Hill Community Foundation; PH Mayor John Hanecak; Korey Riley, Sprayground Chair and PHR&PD Aquatics Supervisor (with Sparky); Jim Utz & Jean Hambleton, PHCF; Dennis Donaghu, PHR&PD Chair and ribbon cutting; the Sprayground; and Suzy Q the Clown.

How It All Began...
The Pleasant Hill Community Foundation spearheaded a two year community-wide effort to raise the necessary funds for this facility at the Pleasant Hill Park pool. This coloful and interactive community resource is accessible to persons of all ages and disabilities. It replaces the wading pool that has been closed by the Contra Costa County Health Department because it did not meet current standards for public pool operations. The water sprayground is installed at the existing pool deck level and offes a variety of passive and "hands on" interactive play equipment. It also provides an adequate area for a "no splash zone" for young infants and toddlers. At the October 14, 2007 OPEN HOUSE, the community was able to see the Sprayground "in operation" with the water flowing at all angles. Light refreshments were served.
We are pleased that with the cooperation of the Pleasant Hill community and the Pleasant Hill Recreation and Park District, we were able to raise the funds necessary for this family-friendly aquatic facility. (Note: the original completion date of May 2007 had been delayed due to plan approvals and late arrival of the necessary equipment). For more information, please call the PH Rec and Park office, 147 Gregory Lane, 682-0896 or e-mail us.
GROUNDBREAKING FOR THE NEW SPRAYGROUND
On Monday, March 15, a ceremonial groundbreaking was held at the site of the old wading pool. With some 35 persons in attendance, Aquatics Supervisor Korey Riley introduced the various dignitaries and supporters, including Councilpersons John Hanacek and David Durant and City Manager June Catalano, PH Rec. and Park District Directors Karen Mitchoff and Cecile Shepard. Park District Board President Sherry Sterrett, General Manager Bob Berggren, and PH Community Foundation President Christine Sampson Hafner addressed the group, all praising the efforts made by the Sprayground Committee and the generosity of the PH community.
Be a Part of Tomorrow.....Today! Buy a Brick
The initial order of bricks has been received from the manufacturer and have been installed at the entrance to the Aquatic Center. Come and see all the bricks and place an order for your brick. An additional order will be sent when sufficient additional orders have been received. For a $50 contribution, one can purchase a brick laser-etched with your name and/or appropriate message which will be part of the Sprayground Donor Wall. Honor and remember a loved one - celebrate a birthday or anniversary - immortalize your family. Forms are available at the PH Rec. and Park District office at 147 Gregory Lane.
UPDATING SPRAYGROUND FUNDING: The DEAN AND MARGARET LESHER FOUNDATION MATCHING GRANT of $20,000 which was announced 9/14/2006 was "matched" on January 30, 2007.
The Sprayground Committee is tremendously thankful for this generous grant from the LESHER FOUNDATION. It has been invaluable in reaching out to the community these past several months. The present total of funds comes to $174,723 which includes the $20,000 LESHER matching funds, thanks to the donations of the individuals and organizations listed below.
