A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PROSPECT LAND TRUST

The Prospect Land Trust was founded as a "spin-off" of COPE, or Citizens Organized to Protect the Environment. This grass-roots movement began as a group of concerned citizens opposed to the sand and gravel mining project proposed along Route 68 by the South Central Connecticut Regional Authority and O&G Construction Company. After the application for mining was withdrawn, partly because of pressure from the group, the members of COPE decided to continue their work towards the protection and preservation of green space in the Town of Prospect. Out of this decision, the Prospect Land Trust was established and incorporated as a nonprofit in 1994.
