Craftsbury Running Camp
My wife and I have been to this running camp in Vermont two times and have enjoyed ourselves immensely. We brought some friends the second time and they said it was very enjoyable. I decided to give a brief description of this camp and if anyone has a question, you can call me.
Craftsbury is approximately 45 minutes northeast of Stowe and 2 hours east of Burlington, Vermont. A beautiful setting right on a lake with a nice wooded area on dirt roads. For six weeks they have a running camp and also a sculling camp. In the winter cross country skiing camp is availabe.
The accommodations are modest dorm style rooms with shared bathrooms and showers down the hall. They have a lounge and small kitchen area where everyone hangs out when not working out. In the basement, there are two simple workout rooms with basic equipment. Also downstairs is a larger meeting room which is used as a classroom and yoga room. The dining hall is a separate building across the road.
Three meals a day are included. Excellent quality and good choices, such as vegetarian friendly, fruits, vegetables and homemade desserts.
Included with your registration are lodging, meals, one massage, one and a half day mountain bike rental and expert coaching. Also included is transportation to some events off the grounds.
Both times that we went, there were three fine coaches and about 18-20 runners. We find this ratio very good. They were able to give everyone personal attention. The group wasn't too big so you were able to know all the runners by the end of the week.
A typical day might be, eat breakfast at 8:00am, pack up the van at 9:00am and drive to the high school track. Run warm-up, do stretches, run some pick-ups, and do some other drills. Run four quarter mile intervals with quarter mile recoveries. Run cool down and stretch. Load up  the van and be back at camp at 11:30am. 12:15pm is lunch. After lunch take a mountain bike ride, kayak on thelake, or take a nap. Dinner is at 5:45pm and after dinner meet in the classroom at 7:00pm Discussions can include traing principles, racing methods, periodization, injury prevention and many more topics.
Running form was video taped and reviewed one day. Another day, we did a full workout. The last day you will do a ten mile run on a hilly and scenic course. Our favorinte day is called Endurathon. On that day we road 15 to 30 miles on a mountain bike, hiked up Mt. Pisgah, (approximately 1800 ft., which took one hour up and one hour down) and if you have any energy left, ther is a 3-6 mile run to the beach where a dip in the cool water feels great!
All the workouts are designed to accommodate a full range of abilities. There is never any pressure to do more than you should. You can work as hard or as easy as you prefer.
Once people experience a comp of this nature, I believe they will always want their vacation to be active ones. Any questions?
