We are currently in Long Lake, New York, in the Atarondack Mountains. Behind us lay the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Green Mountains of Vermont, their steep grades turned to Fairy Dust by the rear wheel of our mighty da Vinci. Well, maybe it wasn't exactly like that, but suffice to say we made it.
Our route followed the Maine coast south to Belfast, where we said good-bye to the Atlantic Ocean, feeling sad to leave and at the same time looking forward to seeing more of our country.
Reaching Augusta we stopped at the Auclair Bicycle Shop to get a spoke repaired, and met Dave Auclair and his crew. We planned to have dinner with Dave later that evening, but were unable to make connections. As we were leaving Augusta we were stopped by Steve Knight. We gladly accepted his invitation to spend the evening at his home. We learned that Steve is a Chemistry teacher at the local high school and his wife is an author of children's books.
After being sent off with a great breakfast we continued west, crossing Kancamagus Pass in New Hampshire and the Middlebury Gap in the Green Mountains of Vermont.
Reaching Shoreham, Vermont we were hosted by the famous Romp Family. They made a historic ride from Vermont to Alaska in 1999 on their quad bicycle, towing the fifth member of the family, Timmy in their trailer. We stayed up until after midnight two days in a row, enjoying exchanging many stories about bicycling adventures. A high point of the visit was a trip to a local Pizza Parlor where Billie plays the Mandolin in the Five Town Band. The next day they rode with us across Lake Champlain on the cable ferry into New York State. We had a great visit and departed with hopes that we meet again sometime in the near future.
The Adirondack Mountains started immediately and we climbed over a series of passes through North Hudson where we camped for the evening. The next day we continued our climbs and descents through the mountains to Long Lake where we stayed in the historic Long View Inn. Something about the place reminded us of the movie, On Golden Pond, and we put a star on the map for another visit someday.
