Our travels this week have brought us south out of the great Redwood Forests, to the land of golden grass hills, dotted with California Oak and Madrona trees. A few evergreens dot the higher hills along the west facing slopes, but the cool, damp forests of the Pacific Northwest are behind us now.
South of Crescent City, we had several hard days of climbing along the Redwood Forests of Del Norte County, capped off by a 7300 foot, 65 mile grunt from Richardson's Grove State Park to Willits, where we collapsed at the KOA for the evening.
The next day we rode the "Skunk" train to Fort Bragg and back. A historic look into the region's past.
From Willits we cruised through vineyards and olive groves under clear blue 90 degree skies into Cloverdale where we spent an extra day at the Thousand Trails Russian River resort. We met just a few miles south of here in the mid-60's and used to travel to the Russian River for picnics and swimming. We just couldn't pass up the chance to recapture a little of the past.
We will be touring through the vine regions, then back out to the coast in Marin County as we continue south over the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco.
Wish you all could be here with us,
George and Sharon
