Dr. Schaffer is a veterinarian and assistant professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences. She was appointed as the first director of the Center in 1997.

She served as a small animal practitioner in Ohio and Chicago for 11 years and as a research associate at Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine for two years.

She has worked in veterinary medical fund-raising and public relations at Tuskegee University for nine years. She served as director of the School of Veterinary Medicine's Office of External Affairs from October 1995 to September 1997.

Dr. Schaffer and her Pekingese dogs have provided animal-assisted therapy to nursing home residents in Tuskegee since 1991.

She earned the BS degree in animal science in 1967 and the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree in 1971 from The Ohio State University.

She was recently honored with the Leo Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award for 2000.  She was selected because of her years of outstanding contributions in human-animal bond activities including teaching, service, and research.

Dr. Brown is a clinical psychologist. She joined the Center in 1999.

She practiced in Michigan and Pennsylvania from 1980 to 1999.  She began teaching at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia in 1986.

While serving as an assistant professor of psychology, she researched ways animals enhance human health.  Her focus was on the relationship between companion animals and stress, dissociation, and absorption in people.

In her private practice, Dr. Brown worked extensively with victims of childhood abuse.

She earned her BA degree in psychology in 1977 and her MA degree in clinical psychology from Oakland University.  She received the Psychology Doctorate (PsyD) degree in clinical psychology in 1986 from Central Michigan University.  She is also certified in clinical hypnosis by the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis.
