Dr. Schaffer presented an interactive demonstration of communication techniques taught at Tuskegee University-to encourage veterinarians to improve their effectiveness and comfort level with clients, staff, and colleagues.

Participants-were shown behavior modification principles that help make fearful or uncooperative animals more willing recipients of rehabilitation therapy and enhance client compliance. In order to provide effective and optimal rehabilitation, the therapist must be able to safely and humanely handle the patients. Companion animal patients are often in pain and being asked to undergo procedures such as hydrotherapy that may initially cause apprehension or procedures such as manual therapy for joint contracture that may cause discomfort.

Drs. Robert K. Anderson and Caroline Schaffer demonstrated the use of the Gentle Leader head collar. For some dogs, this equipment can be valuable in enabling the therapist to achieve relaxed control of the dog for therapeutic exercise on leash.

-Dr. Caroline Schaffer talked about "Pet Care for People Infected with HIV" at Montgomery AIDS Outreach in Montgomery, AL, on May 11, 2001.
- Dr. Caroline Schaffer talked about the veterinarian's role in animal-assisted activities with students enrolled in the elective course titled, "The Human-Animal Bond and Animal Welfare Issues" at Auburn University's College of Veterinary Medicine on Feb. 22, 2001.
- Dr. Caroline Schaffer was the invited speaker at the Interdisciplinary and Multidisciplinary Healthcare Forum of the Tuskegee Area Health Education Center, Inc. in Tuskegee, AL on Jan 26, 2001.  Her lecture was titled "Pets as Partners in the Therapeutic Care Setting."
