Dear Midwest City High School Alumnus:
The objective of this letter is to bring you up to date on the progress that has been made toward the development of the Midwest City High School Museum. This letter is being sent to the representatives of all Midwest City High School graduating classes.
Members of the Midwest City High School Museum, Inc. (MCHSMI) met May 11, 2000 at the Midwest City Board of Education building for the purpose of reviewing the architectural designs and visiting the site of the new 1500 sq. ft. Bomber Museum. Delegates from 36 graduating classes attended. For those of you unable to attend, the following is a summary of this very successful and productive session.
Dr. Cheryl Steele, Superintendent of Mid-Del Schools, presented her thoughts on preserving school history and the importance of involving the alumni - those who actually lived it and made it. She explained the possibility of renovating the former south entrance of the Midwest City High School as a site for the museum. She announced a building improvement investment of $100,000 as the Board of Education's committment to making the museum a reality. Larry Springfield, Assistant Superintendent of Operations, gave an overview of the museum construction and introduced Jeff Wegener, a 1972 MCHS graduate and architect with Locke, Wright, Pruitt, & Brown, who displayed drawings for the remodeling.
Since our meeting, Big City Construction was selected as general contractor on June 6, 2000, and construction has started on the modification for the south entrance. The construction company has agreed on a completion date of October 1, 2000.
The next step is to get this information out to our classmates. For those classes having reunions, we encourage you to take this opportunity to share the good news about the museum and recruit those who would like to help in the development of the facility. It would also be a good time to request memorabilia and to inform them of the need for monetary donations. We estimate that we will need approximately $30,000 to purchase display cases and other furnishings for the museum. Attached is a form you may want to distribute to your classmates for donations. Since MCHSMI is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization, donations will be acknowledged for tax purposes.
We are encouraged by the positive response we are getting from all of the graduating classes. The first charitable donation was from Dr. J. E. Sutton, former Superintendent of Mid-Del Schools. We are considering establishing a founders plaque which would list those individuals contributing $100 or more.
We would appreciate your contacting classmates with this information and urge you to finalize your selection of a class delegate. Delegates will be notified of future meetings and they, in turn, are welcomed to invite any classmates to attend these meetings. Ideas and help in all areas, especially committees, will be needed.
Please use this letter, or any portion of it to contact classmates, and feel free to call us if we can help, or if you have any questions concerning the museum.
Sincerely,
Damon D. Wingfield
