Listen As Whispers Build To A Crescendo

There is a Tibetan proverb that says, “Goodness speaks in a whisper. Evil
shouts.” On Sept. 11, evil did indeed shout in the United States. It shouted
loudly enough to be heard around the world, and its echoes are still being
heard. But just beneath the roar, if one listens carefully, one can hear
whispers. Whispers…

In the bravery of the firemen and rescue workers and the 20-hour days of
medical workers in New York and Washington, in the resolve of the passengers
on United Airlines Flight 93 who prevented another tragedy.

In the bells of Notre Dame and Big Ben being rung in tribute and support in
Paris and London, in the three minutes of silence in Sarajevo, in Bucharest,
in Belfast and in Ramallah.

In the rallies by 200,000 in Berlin, by 15,000 in Seattle, by 200 in Teheran
and even by 1,000 “ladies of the night” in Calcutta.

In The Star-Spangled Banner, sung in Ottawa by Prime Minister Jean Chretien
and in London by Queen Elizabeth. In the makeshift shrines in Washington
Square, in Warsaw, in Geneva, and at the American embassies in Beijing,
Seoul and Tokyo.

In the unfurling of the giant American flag over the Pentagon, and in the
flags flying at half-mast in Russia, in Bangladesh, in Switzerland, in
Australia.

In the overrun blood donations centers in New York, Washington, Dallas,
Chicago and Oklahoma City.

In the worship services in Christian churches, Jewish synagogues, Muslim
mosques and Buddhist temples around the world.

A whisper alone is difficult to hear. But the combined whispers of millions
are drowning out the shouts of a few dozen madmen.
