And what does an Occupational Therapist do???
Do not confuse it with Physical Therapy...and no we are not JUST Upper Extremity PTs....
Someone once said to me, "a Physical Therapist may teach you to walk again, but an Occupational Therapist will teach you to dance."
An Occupational Therapist's main goal is to work with clients so they may live functional and meaningful lives. Regain their indpendence. Teach them skills for everyday living.
First...ask yourself this question. What do I find MEANINGFUL in my life? HMMM...now read on.
An Occupational Therapist...
* Treats people of ALL ages and in ALL different types of settings like schools, hospitals, nursing homes, private homes...oh the list can go on.
* Teach skills to people that are important to them to become functional in their everyday life after injury, sickness, psychosocial problems and/or developmental problems.
(For example, let's say you are a violinist recovering from a stroke. The violin is your whole life. An OT will teach you techniques to recover fine motor skills in your hands to play that violin again.)
*Educate people on how to prevent injury, sickness and promote holistic health.
*Consult businesses in ergonomics and injury prevention.(This is a big area. Injury prevention is another incentive to businesses to properly train employees to prevent injury and high insurance costs.)
*Write congressmen and encourage them to support health care reform and the Patient's Bill of Rights.
