Elvis Presley is being called the Artist of the Century. He had and continues to have a great impact on music of all types even though it has been over 20 years since he left us. I have been an Elvis fan since I first heard him on the radio singing "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Don't Be Cruel" in early 1956. I remember watching him perform his gospel rendition of "Peace In The Valley" later that same year on the Ed Sullivan Show. This performance proved to many skeptical parents and morality critics alike that he was not just a "hip-shaking rock and roller." It demonstrated that his knowledge and delivery of gospel music was exceptional, and was based on childhood and early teen years of attendance and singing with his mother at church and tent revivals. He knew and could sing from memory a large number of gospel and hymnal songs.

In his later teens, Elvis could be found at every gospel concert appearing in Memphis. It was during this time that he was befriended by such gospel greats as J. D. Sumner and the Blackwood Brothers, as well as many of the Black gospel groups. He was often invited backstage and would join them in song. He developed a unique style that incorporated the styles of all of these groups. His personal favorite artist at this time was Jake Hess, who still is active in gospel music through the Gaither Reunion concerts. Elvis won the senior talent contest at Humes High School just prior to his 1953 graduation.

Elvis had a tenor voice and a full 3 octave range. He loved to sing the bass parts, but he could hit the high notes so clearly and dramatically that it came to be recognized as one of the greatest aspects of his style.

Some aspects of his life were quite sad, and his untimely death at the age of only 42 made it even sadder. His many fans, including myself, were very shocked. In the last few years of his life, he included at least one gospel song in each concert, the favorite being his grammy-winning song "How Great Thou Art". Elvis released over 660 songs during his lifetime and 68 of them were gospel or inspirational songs. His ratio of 1 out of every 10 songs being gospel or inspirational was practically unheard of and shows his great love for this type of music. Late every evening, after a concert performance, he and his friends would unwind by singing gospel music for hours.

I first performed an Elvis impersonation in 1994 during my youngest daughter's wedding reception. The seamstress who designed her bridesmaid's gowns secretly made an Elvis costume for me, and I was able to surprise everyone. I used tapes her DJ sent me to perform 4 Elvis songs. I was hooked on karaoke before I knew it. During the last 5 years I have accumulated over 300 Elvis CD karaoke songs, and over 45 songs are gospel or inspirational. With my newest karaoke system, I now have my own "band and backup singers" helping me present my interpretation of his music. Just as he did, I most enjoy performing the gospel and inspirational music. I hope that I may have the opportunity to present my interpretation of Elvis' gospel music for you some time in the future. Please visit the other areas of my web site, and contact me about performing for you at your church or for your organization. May God bless you every day.
