The Twenty-Year Death Cycle

Beginning in 1841, there has been a twenty-year presidential death cycle in the United States.  From 1840 through 1960, every U.S. president elected in a year ending in a “0” has died in office.  Ronald Reagan apparently broke the cycle when he survived a nearly fatal assassination attempt on March 30, 1981.  It is an open question whether the 2000 presidential election will resume the cycle.

Tecumseh’s Curse

The presidential death cycle became known as Tecumseh’s curse, after the Shawnee Chief who organized Native Americans against the U.S. government, which he saw as a threat to his people.  William Henry Harrison commanded the troops who killed Tecumseh on October 13, 1813.  Legend has it that Tecumseh’s surviving brother, named Prophet, was outraged when Harrison was elected President.  To avenge Tecumseh’s death, Prophet allegedly performed a ritual to curse the U.S. presidency.  Harrison was inaugurated on March 4, 1841 and died on April 4, 1841 of pneumonia, which he contracted at the outdoor inauguration.

The Jupiter-Saturn Cycle and Mundane Events

For thousands of years astrologers have noted a correlation between the twenty-year Jupiter-Saturn cycle and socio-cultural-political events.  Jupiter and Saturn are the two most distant planets visible to the naked eye.  The ancients regarded Saturn, the outermost visible planet marking the boundary of our solar system, as the “Great Chronocrator” – a kind of cosmic hour-hand that ticked off significant periods in human history.  In this clock analogy, Jupiter is a cosmic minute-hand that crosses over (conjoins) Saturn approximately every twenty years, thus beginning a new cycle.

There is a larger cycle of about 200 years having to do with the progression of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions through the signs of the zodiac according to the sequence of elements: fire, earth, air, and water.  For example, from 1800 through 2000, most of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions have occurred in earth signs.  From 1600 to 1800, the conjunctions took place primarily in fire signs, and from 2000 to 2200 they will conjoin mostly in air signs.  These 200-year periods are thought to represent discrete epochs in mundane history.

The Birth Chart of the United States

Astrologers differ on which chart to use for the birth of our nation.  A popular chart that has stood the test of time is the so-called “Gemini-rising” chart cast for the 4th of July 1776, at 2:13:32 a.m., (time zone +5:00:39) at Philadelphia, PA, (coordinates 39o N 57'08'', 075o W 09'51'').  The well-known astrologer Evangeline Adams (who died on November 10, 1932) used a U.S.A. Gemini-rising chart to forecast the United States entry into World War II.   Adams, however, in her book Astrology for Everyone, used 3:03 a.m. rather than 2:13:32 in the morning. The 2:13:32 a.m. chart has Aquarius on the Midheaven, which signifies the presidency.  The rulers of Aquarius are Saturn and Uranus, which thus symbolize the president.  The eighth house of any chart signifies death; and in the U.S. Gemini-rising chart, Capricorn is on the eighth cusp, making Saturn a ruler of death.

Jupiter-Saturn and the Presidential Death Cycle

During the period from 1840 through 1960, every U.S. President elected under the influence of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in an earth sign has died in office.  Because the element earth is related to the material plane, the effects of conjunctions in earth are more likely to have a physical manifestation.  The only exception to the sequence of deaths near the Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions is that of Zachary Taylor.

The list below summaries the dates of the Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions for the past 200 years and the presidents who were elected to office under their influence.

Chronology of Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions and the U.S. Presidents:

Thomas Jefferson (3rd president, 1801-1809)

1802 (July 17): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 05o VIRGO 08' Direct (Earth).  Jefferson did not die in office, perhaps because this conjunction was exactly sextile the U.S. natal Jupiter, which exerted a protective influence.

James Monroe (5th president, 1817-1825)

1821 (June 19): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 24o ARIES 39' Direct (Fire).  Monroe did not die in office.  This conjunction occurred in a fire sign.

William Henry Harrison (9th president, 1841)

1842 (January 26): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 08o CAPRICORN 54' Direct (Earth).  Harrison died of pneumonia a month after his inauguration.

Zachary Taylor (12th president, 1849-1850).

This death did not correlate with a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction.  However, Taylor was inaugurated on March 5, 1849 (with transiting Uranus at 20 o Aries) and died of cholera on July 9, 1850 (when transiting Saturn reached 20 o Aries and conjoined the position of Uranus at the time of his inauguration).

Abraham Lincoln (16th president, 1861-1865)

1861 (October 21): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 18o VIRGO 22' Direct   (Earth).  Lincoln was assassinated.  He died on April 15, 1865.

James A. Garfield (20th president, 1881)

1881 (April 18): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 01o TAURUS 36' Direct   (Earth).   On July 2, 1881,Garfield was shot at the Washington D.C. train station by an insane disappointed office seeker.  He died eleven weeks later on September 19, 1881.

William McKinley (25th president, 1897-1901)

1901 (November 28): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 14o CAPRICORN 00' Direct  (Earth).  On September 6, 1901, McKinley was shot by the anarchist Leon Czolgosz and died on September 14, 1901.

Warren Harding (29th president, 1921-1923)

1921 (September 9): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 26o VIRGO 36' Direct  (Earth).  Harding died of a heart attack on August 2, 1923.

Franklin Delano Roosevelt (32nd president, 1933-1945)

Roosevelt experienced a triple conjunction as Jupiter passed directly over Saturn in 1940, then turned retrograde to cross Saturn a second time, and finally went direct and conjoined Saturn for a third in 1941.  He died of a cerebral hemorrhage on April 12, 1945.

1940 (August 7): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 14o TAURUS 27' Direct   (Earth).

1940 (October 19): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 12o TAURUS 28' Retrograde (Earth).

1941 (February 15): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 09o TAURUS 07' Direct   (Earth).

John F. Kennedy (35th president, 1961-1963)

1961 (February 18): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 25o CAPRICORN 12' Direct (Earth).  Kennedy was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald on November 22, 1963.  His death had been predicted in advance by many astrologers.

Ronald Reagan (40th president, 1981-1989)

Like Roosevelt, Reagan experienced a triple Jupiter-Saturn conjunction, but in an air rather than an earth sign.  The element air is related to mental and communicative functioning and may have signified his impending Alzheimer’s disease, which many feel was evidenced in his memory lapses and blank stares during speeches late in his presidency.

1980 (December 31): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 09o LIBRA 30' Direct   (Air).

1981 (March 4): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 08o LIBRA 06' Retrograde   (Air).

1981 (July 23): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 04o LIBRA 56' Direct   (Air).

2000 (May 28): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 22o TAURUS 43' Direct   (Earth).  This conjunction fell in the 12th house of grief and sorrow in the U.S. Gemini-rising chart, which suggests that the nation may again undergo a period of mourning for the person elected president in the year 2000.

2020 (December 21): Jupiter-Saturn Conjunction at 00oAQUARIUS 29' Direct (Air).  The last air conjunction was in 1980-1981.  This 2020 conjunction begins a sequence of uninterrupted conjunctions in air until the year 2159.

The President Elect 2000

Looking at the pattern of Jupiter/Saturn conjunctions over the past 200 years, one sees that the 2000 conjunction is the only one in this series that occurs entirely before election day.  In every other case, there has been a conjunction of Jupiter and Saturn after the U.S. presidential election.  Does this mean that the president elected in 2000 will not follow the pattern and will survive his term in office?

Also important is that the 2000 Jupiter/Saturn conjunction is the final one in the earth series.  The current president and those elected in 2004, 2008, 2012, and 2016 will preside over a country that is leaving earth and entering air.  With the 2020 conjunction occuring in Aquarius at the same time as the precession of the equinoxes leads us into the Age of Aquarius, we can expect an exciting Uranian/Aquarian era for the United States to get underway in earnest twenty years from now.
