How did you get into the rabbit hobby?
(Something I hear a lot)

I did not always live in Pennsylvania.... I started raising rabbits 17 years ago, I was 9 yeard old and living in Milbrook, NY. My parents wanted me to get involved in 4-H, but we did not have enough land for horses, cows, sheep, goats, or any of the other larger animals....SO they decided to get me involved in the rabbit program. We went to the Dutchess County Fair to pick out my first 4-H rabbit (I think they thought that  it would be THE 4-H rabbit, not the first of many). My first rabbit was a red-eyed white netherland dwarf. I liked him a lot, but when I started showing him, I decided that he needed some freinds.
I decided not to raise dwarfs, and after buying/adopting a specimen or two of several different breeds, I decided on English Angoras. Although they were a lot of work, I did pretty well with the Angoras. I even won a Best in Show with one of my does. BUT THEN.............. One night, we went to my 4-H meeting.  My 4-H leader had several carriers and crates lined up near the driveway. Some of the other club members and I  inspected the contents of these containers. I looked inside one of the crates, and it was filled with all of these beautiful, velvet creatures! I was very upset when I learned that they were destined for "Luther's Livestock Market". So I begged my mother to just let me get "one more rabbit". I chose a broken black buck. Luckily, he had previously belonged to my 4-H leader's sister-in-law, so I was able to send for his pedigree. That was "Joe Cool", my first Rex rabbit.
Several months later, I went to a rabbit show. While walking around, I found a little black Rex doe for sale. I asked my mother if we could buy her, but we had "too many rabbits". So, I promised to sell off the Angoras, so that I could begin raising Rex. About that time, we moved to Poughkeepsie, NY, and the Rex went with us. And that is how it all started.... until I had to leave for college.
I was lucky enough that my parents were willing to care for a few of my Rex while I was away, but after several years, only one of my original Rex was still with us. I moved him down to live in Pennsylvania with me, and eventually found the Mason-Dixon Rex Rabbit Breeders Club. Skip Becker was kind enough to sell me a nice, black Rex doe, and that is how it all started the second time around. I now raise  Blacks (a few left from my original line!) as well as Chocolates, Opals, and my favorite and greatest challenge, Lynx.
I also raise Mini Rex (in Opal and broken Opal), as well as Beverens (White and Blue.)
