What is a white dove release?
In a traditional white dove release at least 12 trained white homing pigeons are set free from a white wicker basket on special occasions, such as birthdays, weddings, funerals, memorials, graduations.
When the doves are released they fly around in the sky as they they search for their way home. This may take 30 minutes or less. Once they find their bearings, they head straight home.
The white doves that are used for white dove releases are snow white homing pigeons that are trained to return to their home loft safely. A typical white dove release should include at least 12 trained white homing pigeons.
White ring neck doves, which you can buy at the pet shop, should not be used for white dove releases because they do not have a homing instinct and cannot fend for themselves. If released outdoors, they may fall pray to cats, dogs, hawks, or run into cars. Once set free, a white ring neck dove will get lost and won't have a home to return to or someone to take care of it. Please do not use white ring neck doves for white dove releases.
