There are many problems that rats can come across, so here is some information to help them never see any of these.
One problem, caused by wire floors, is called Bumble Foot. This looks like a scab that can break open and bleed. So cover the wire floor with towels or any other material that is soft and can be removed for cleaning.
The largest disease is repiratory infections. This is caused by litter that has dust in it. Thats why it is very important to use CareFresh or Yesterday's News... this is very deadly to rats and is very common.
Strep Throat is also a problem for rats. It can kill them if it is not treated in 3-4 days. A thing to know: It can be passed from owner to pet, so anyone with strep throat should not be near or handle the rats until they are better.
Another big problem, mostly for female rats is Tumors. Some have cancer, others do not. If you find a Tumor on your rat it is best to take it to a vet to get more information. It can be removed by surgery.
Three types of bugs to worry about:
1. Rat Mite- This bug lives around the cage and only comes into the cage to suck the rats blood. These bugs also bite humans.
2. Fur Mite- Live in the hair and can cause itching. They can not live on humans.
3. Rat Lice- Yellow and Reddish are found in the rats back. The eggs appear in a silver coating on the rats back. They can not live on humans, and human lice can not live on them.
To get rid of lice and mites use ivermectin. Put it all over their fur. Also clean the cage, and get ride of the bedding. If you let your rats out into the house, clean the carpets and any other area they have been in.
